NYC Health + Hospitals is the largest public health care system in the nation—a network of 11 hospitals, trauma centers, neighborhood health centers, nursing homes, and post-acute care centers. The integrated health care system provides essential services to more than one million New Yorkers every year in more than 70 locations across the City’s five boroughs, focused on New Yorkers’ health, patient care and clinical decision making.
To provide the best care possible for its patients, the doctors and staff at NYC Health + Hospitals often need to share patient data and other sensitive information with external parties, such as specialists, community-based physicians, insurance companies, and government agencies at the state and local level.
The exchange of this information must be secure and in compliance with HIPAA and HITECH, however not to the extent where it’s disruptive to staff workflows. “Our doctors and employees collaborate daily with outside parties, and we needed a more effective and secure way to make that happen,” said Soma Bhaduri, Director of Information Security & Risk Management with NYC Health + Hospitals. “Building security into everyday content sharing was a critical next step.”
NYC Health + Hospitals evaluated several secure content collaboration solutions, but ultimately selected Accellion kiteworks for ease-of-use and the highest levels of security and control. A major selling point was Accellion’s Microsoft Outlook plug-in, which integrates kiteworks and content systems such as Google Drive and Box with Microsoft Outlook. The Outlook plug-in makes it easy for NYC Health + Hospitals employees to follow security best practices when exchanging confidential information through email.
NYC Health + Hospitals launched a pilot project, rolling out kiteworks to 6,000 users. Since then, they’ve rapidly expanded the roll-out across sites and departments.
“With one solution, we enhanced internal and external collaboration and improved business communications and agility for our employees,” said Bhaduri. “Our senior leaders are thrilled that kiteworks was embraced so quickly.”
